    Reaching 14 months after Cyclone Nargis struck, the humanitarian community in Myanmar calls for increased support to provide quality education for all children and youth in the affected area. The cyclone had a severe impact on the education sector, destroying and damaging 56.6% of total number of schools (i.e. 4,106 schools), according to the PONJA report. It was widespread loss of school furniture and teaching/learning materials, and also many teachers were among the victims.

  • Five independent United Nations human rights experts* on Tuesday urged the authorities of Myanmar to ensure that the trial of  Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the National League for Democracy and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, and two of her aides, is “fair and open.”
